PETS IN PORTRAITS @Tate Britain
Look at people and their pets today. Pets tell something about their owners. A tour through the galleries to see portraits of some unfamous pets loved by their owners. Cats, dogs and even monkeys depicted in portraits since 1540. British are well known for being true animal lovers, let's explore how this shows on British Art from the 16th century to our days!
After exploring the galleries we will visit...some real animals at the nearby Vauxhall City Farm!
TUESDAY 13th February
SQUISHY PAINTINGS @Tate Modern
If there's a group of artist that never run out of imagination and creativity these are the group of artists from Surrealism. Surrealism mixes dream and reality in the same artworks, the unconscious part of the brain guides the artist that's why artists needed to invent new creative techniques to force the unconscious to work. We will see the works by some surreal artists in the galleries and later experiment with different surreal techniques, like the decalcomania involves applying paint to paper then folding it, applying pressure and then unfolding the paper to reveal a mirror pattern.
Decalcomania is most commonly associated with the surrealist painters Max Ernst and Oscar Dominguez, who would use the technique and then turn the resulting patterns into landscapes and mythical creatures
WEDNESDAY 14th February
BALLOON-LIKE CUSHIONS @Camp base
Have you heard about american artist Jeff Koons? He is a pop Artis based in NY that makes, among many other things, huge balloon dog-shaped sculptures and place them in the most unusual spaces. During the day we will learn about the artists, some of his most relevant works and discuss with the children why is considered Art and deserves a space in a museum. Children will make inspired balloon dog-shaped cushion to take home.
THURSDAY 15th February
SECRETS FROM CHINA @British Museum
The Chinese have cultivated a way and culture that celebrates their nation in a way that's unique and to celebrate this Chinese New Year 2018 we have prepared a day-long scavenger hunt that will take the kids into a wonderful adventure through the streets of London, from our camp base in Shadwell to the British Museum or the streets of Soho. The clues, hidden in fortune cookies, will guide the children from one point to London to another while learning about chinese culture, History, language and Art.
FRIDAY 16th February
SURREAL SCULPTURES @Museum of Curiosities
Shrunken heads, dodo bones, mermaids, unicorns, fairies, extinct bird feathers, cyclops skulls, elephant bird eggs and much more awaits at the Viktor Wynd's Museum of Curiosities in Hackney. Children will explore the quirky collection guided by our fabulous teachers to get inspiration to create a surreal sculpture to take home inspired in Salvador Dali's grotesque and imaginative characters.
